Municipal was started by Claire Bennie, formerly Development Director at Peabody.

Claire was fortunate enough to be given the remit of continuing Peabody’s 150 year history of enlightened commissioning of new housing, taking the baton from the pioneer Dickon Robinson. Claire and her team commissioned outstanding design teams and contractors who shared Peabody’s quality ambitions, delivering thousands of new homes across London for those on all incomes. Claire also promoted smaller architectural practices, in the knowledge that they were more than capable of designing and delivering homes for Peabody.

Claire trained as an architect and qualified in 1998, practising for about 10 years before switching to the commissioning side. Claire is now a panel member of Design South East which undertakes design review for a number of Local Authorities, and Claire co-chairs the Brighton and Hove Design Review Panel.

Claire also lives on a 1930s estate in south London with 500 residents, 2 caretakers and an estate manager. Claire has served on the estate’s Board which oversaw the management of a £4m communal heating renewal programme including tribunal process, lease changes, design, procurement and installation.

Claire is currently in discussion with select experienced property professionals about working together as associates.

We need more developers like [Peabody] with the desire to continue a great legacy of public spirited housing in London.
— Evening Standard 2011
Claire Bennie has been a fantastic person to work with and a role model for women in our industry. Peabody Trust are an inspiring client and we sure will miss Claire’s talent.

Bennie is perhaps the most significant commissioner of work from emerging architects.
